Hi everyone! It’s been a tough time for Japan with 3 typhoons in 2 weeks! The day after Typhoon Trami, I took part in a cutlass fish fishing tournament organized by Sankei Sports Newpaper. It is a tournament that only allows the use of a No.40 (150g) Tenya Jig with any bait of choice.
The usual method for this type of offshore Cutlass fish Tenya jigging, is the use of a soft rod with an electric baitcasting reel. This is because some people find it tiring to reel up from 100m or more manually, and therefore it became a popular must-have item. As for me, I wanted to find out if it was really that tiring or not, so all I brought was a standard baitcasting jigging reel with a depth counter. I used Daiwa Light Game ICV 200H-L (Click on reel picture on top for info).
The rules of this tournament are simple:
- Get on a ship called Sanpoumaru that leaves from Kada port in Wakayama
- Tournament duration: 12:00-4.30pm
- Get the largest or most number of cutlassfish (Choose 1 or both categories to participate in)
- Use only one rod, a No.40 Tenya jig on a nylon leader and with a bait of your choice
- The angler with the largest or most number of cutlass fish will proceed to the finals
For the first 2 hours, it was tough for me as I only had small nibbles but not a huge bite. So I decided to switch to Daiwa SS White Night Light Tenya with red glitter

That was when I felt more action on the tip of my rod and then SET THE HOOK!
I got it!

So I decided to use the same Tenya jig and caught another 2 more, but smaller.

I couldn’t get through to the finals because the largest Cutlass fish for the day was 109.4cm wide! Some people left with 1 or 2, and some zero. It was a tough day because of the passing of the typhoon and probably due to the fact that it was a neap tide too.
However, I was glad that I could get 3 and that even with a non-electric reel I could enjoy the weight and fight of these cutlass fish during the tournament!
