Hi everyone! It’s almost the rainy season and anglers are trying to go fishing as often as possible before the rain comes. This time, I went to Izumiotsu Shiomi wharf in South Osaka. It’s easy to get there by the Nankai Express train. Get off at Izumiotsu Station and take a short taxi ride to the seaside.
Today, I decided to use ragworms and a double-hook set with a sinker below. The water was murky due to heavy rain the day before. I started fishing from 3pm till sunset, and cut each worm into 2 pieces to make them bite sized and easier to set the hook when a fish bites.
First, I caught a Fat Greenling at about 3.30pm (1st picture above). Fat Greenlings are called Ainame or Aburame (Osaka) and are seasonal fish only found in May and June. These fish are fatty and delicious when served as sashimi or steamed and in some cases a delicacy due to its rarity. I could catch 2 Fat Greenlings today and released them both as they are still young. In Hokkaido in July, you can catch large Fat Greenlings larger than 25cm. It is important to note that rock fish take a long time to grow, therefore a 25-cm rock fish might be more than 10 years old in some cases.
After awhile there were no bites and I decided to take a break and sink my teeth into some green tea cake. At sunset, I decided to move to a different spot just 4 meters away. I used a slow retrieve technique and managed to set the hook on a dark banded rockfish / Mebaru (2nd picture above)! It was feisty and full of energy! Again, I decided to release it today so that it can come back when it’s bigger.
